One of my most vivid memories takes place in an old house in a small Missouri town. My father was home for a few days, resting from his job as an over the road truckdriver.
He sat in a broken blue chair. The cushion was flat and the blue crushed velvet had faded from years of use. The room was dark, lit only by the fake fire that crackled and hissed as the plastic flames moved back and forth.
I laid near my father's feet and listened as he read me the story of The Hobbit. His voice changed with the characters and eventually, I fell asleep.
I grew up with The Lord of The Rings. I grew up with stories of goblins, elves, wizards, and giant spiders. Stories of brave men and beautifully powerful women filled my childhood. I developed quite a fascination with Elves and Princesses.
I'm pretty sure those two were my Holloween costume every year till I stopped dressing up at 14.
Anytime I have creative play in the studio I find I'm still drawn to these memorable stories of my childhood. I'm always drawn in by a bit of fantasy- something that makes the viewer feel like they are looking into a world that isn't their own.
Thank you, Shelby, for giving me space to create something beautiful and enchanting.
Love, Melinda
